Que blitzes way to 1-shot lead

-

Angelo Que scorched the Laguna National Golf and Country Club with a bogey-free six-under par 66 yesterday to wrest a one-stroke lead over Malaysian Danny Chia halfway through the Laguna National Asean Championship in Singapore.

The long-hitting Que, who sizzled with a 65 Thursday, frolicked on the rain-softened fairways and came out with a flawless round by hitting superb approach shots and making six putts for birdies to seize control.

“The greens here are very soft so I can play aggressive shots and attack with my approach shots,” said Que. “It is quite a short course and I can hit all the par-5s in two. I am also making some putts so it’s going well.”

On a day of under-par scoring with preferred lies played, Singapore’s rising amateur star Quincy Quek turned in the day’s best score of 64, an eagle-spiked, bogey-less round, to lie three strokes off Que in a tie with another Filipino Cassius Casas.

The comebacking Casas, who used to dominate the Philippine golf circuit, matched Que’s six-under card to pool a 36-hole aggregate of 134.

Chia, who showed the way with a 64 in the first round of this event serving as the third leg of the Asean Golf Tour, slowed down with a 68 for a 132.

Que, the former two-time amateur champion who turned pro in 2003, is chasing a second victory after scoring a breakthrough win in the inaugural Vietnam Masters of the Asian Tour in 2004.

“Things have not gone as well as I had hoped after that first win but I am being patient and a win here would do wonders for my confidence,” said Que.
