H Centre, Toyota take Game 1

- Joey Villar -

Harbour Centre and Toyota Balintawak look headed for another confrontation for the PBL Unity Cup crown.

The Batang Pier and the Roadkings, the league’s bitterest of rivals, pulled off contrasting victories over their respective rivals at the start of the PBL Unity Cup Final Four at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Harbour Centre bamboozled Henkel-Sista, 87-62, while Toyota walked the tightrope before overcoming elimination round No. 1 team Cebuana Lhuillier-Pera Padala, 68-65.

The Batang Pier and the Roadkings hope to seal a title rematch as they go for a sweep of their semis games Tuesday at the Olivarez Center in Parañaque.

“We shot well and played well,” said Harbour coach Jorge Gallent.

Henkel-Sista couldn’t get its game going with ace guard Ryan Reyes struck by a groin injury. Reyes was fielded in for less than a minute late in the second quarter and didn’t score a point.

Defense, meanwhile, proved to be the key for Toyota as it blanked CL Pera Padala in final 5.26 minutes to score the improbable triumph.

“If we’re going to win this series, we need to play tough defense. We did that in this game,” said Joe Devance.
