Alaska Milk, the undisputed PBA team of the 90s, started its stint in the new decade by drubbing Shell Velocity, 67-64, last night at the Philsports Arena.
Old mainstays Kenneth Duremdes, Bong Hawkins, Johnny Abarrientos, Poch Juinio and Rodney Santos carried much of the fight for Alaska as the Milkmen overcame a gritty Shell side to gain a share of the early lead in the PBA All-Filipino Cup.
Still showing some depth despite the departure of former main man Jojo Lastimosa, Alaska opened its campaign in the season on a winning note like Ginebra Sunday, and Sta. Lucia and Tanduay Rhum Wednesday.
The Milkmen actually flirted with disaster, nearly losing a six-point lead in the final minute but they worked behind a resolute defense in the closing seconds to complete the win watched by a big holiday crowd.
With Alaska holding a precarious 65-64 lead with 6.5 seconds remaining in the contest, Hawkins rose to the occasion, forcing Benjie Paras to a crucial error on a tough defense at high post.
Santos made it 67-64 on two free throws off a foul by Brixter Encarnacion with 1.7 seconds left in the game. -
