31 Tacloban athletes to compete in Batang Pinoy nat’l

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Thirty-one young athletes will represent this capital city of Leyte in the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Championship in Bacolod City on November 19 to 23.

City Sports Office chief Joel Bugho said the athletes won medals in six events of the 2013 Batang Pinoy Visayas Qualifying Leg held in Maasin City, Southern Leyte last month.

They reaped seven gold medals, eight silvers and 34 bronze from athletics, swimming, taekwondo, lawn tennis, badminton and karatedo events.    

Bugho said the city government, led by Mayor Alfred Romualdez, has scheduled a ceremony next Monday to honor these athletes with plaques of recognition. 

These athletes are: Clark Anthony Mendoza, Hans Rommel Caminong, Izzhar Ian Vio Balbon, Arnold Benedict Embog, Rhyz Lazarte, James Francis Ranan, John Chistofer Appara, Clint Torrence Morales, Valerian Ernest Bengzon, Kurt Pajuelas, Klentvelley Gilbuena, Harvey Klein Gilbuena, Fenon Jay Pamenmiano, Kish Miguel Laboy, Oliver Isla, Rhode Russel Canillas, Zandra Ann Marie Empino, Jorie May Amistoso, Chelsea Joan Aragon, Kathleen Anne Montecillo, Christine Mae Stose, Ma. Lourdes Espina, Edyssa Lalaine Tiozon, Ma. Coleen Rose Alvarico, Mary Faith Verecio, Marie Nelle Valdevia, Beverly Flor Hidalgo, Ma. Felrose Duran, Ella Mae Espina, Ivy Rose Magcuro and Angelica Petronio.

In last year's Batang Pinoy National Championship held in Iloilo, athletes from Tacloban City won bronze medals in taekwondo, athletics and swimming. (FREEMAN)
