Lucy files resolution lauding Casimero win

- Lalaine Jimenea -

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez (4th district, Leyte) filed a resolution at the House on Feb. 14 lauding and congratulating John Riel Casimero for winning the IBF flyweight interim title during the recent controversial bout in Buenas Aires, Argentina against local boxer Luis Lazarte.

Lucy said Casimero, an Ormocanon like her, has brought pride to the country despite being mobbed in the ring by angry hometown fans who she described as “sore losers.”

The congresswoman was also touched when told that Casimero still went on fighting for the country’s honor despite knowing that his younger brother, 19-year-old Jason, had just died, and a wake was being held in their house at that time.

Casimero, the 22-year-old son of a porter at the city’s port, trained as a boxer in Cebu and is now under the International Pharmaceuticals Inc. Gym in Mandaue City.

The Ormocanon boxer arrived in Cebu City the other day and sailed for Ormoc yesterday where IPI personnel and city residents gave him a hero’s welcome.

Alexander Limosnero, IPI-Eastern Visayas regional manager, said Casimero was paraded around the city in a motorcade before proceeding to the City Hall where he was accorded some honors by city officials led by Mayor Eric Codilla. - THE FREEMAN
