MANILA, Philippines — Regional directors (RDs) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) have one week to stop illegal gambling in their areas of jurisdiction or be removed from their post, PNP chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said yesterday.

“To the concerned RDs of the PNP, I have forwarded to you a list of operators in the different regions I’m giving you a week. If you cannot stop, I will relieve you,” he said during a press briefing.

The new deadline will be effected nationwide against all forms of illegal gambling, including jueteng, small town lottery, video karera and others, the PNP chief said.

Gamboa earlier said he would impose a one-strike policy on police commanders following reports of rampant illegal gambling activities in some cities.

Gamboa also reiterated his no-take policy for all police officers, who could be relieved and administratively charged if they are caught accepting bribes from gambling operators.

“Nationwide yan. Because the PNP chief does not get a single centavo from jueteng. Hindi ko rin pinapaipon,” he said.

Last week, three city police chiefs and eight precinct commanders were sacked for failing to curb illegal gambling activities in their areas.
