Maribago road facelift aims to solve flooding

CEBU, Philippines - An old private road in Sitio Buyong, Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City will be rehabilitated soon so that the flooding issues in the area can be addressed.

Marigondon barangay captain Joseph Pangatungan said the rehabilitation will also resolve the uneven and potholed street in the area.

"Dako ang matabang kay higher man ang iyahang elevation, so ang design nga gi-suggest sa atong engineer kay since takiliron man siya gamay, ang tanan nga tubig moadto sa side sa fence sa (nearby resort) going to the sea. Mura siya og mahulog nga natural drainage system," Pangatungan said.

The two-way road to be asphalted has a length of 1,093 square meters and a width of about four to five meters.

Pangatungan said he already discussed with City Mayor Paz Radaza to ask for the financial assistance for the road renovation.

"Ang akong gi-discuss ni Mayor Paz sa miaging adlaw, mo-contribute pud sila kay ang Deed of Donation ana is in favor of the barangay dili in favor of the city. So far, wala pay figures kay wala pa nahatag sa (Maribago) Bluewater ang notarized nga copy namo ug para pud dili ta ma-technical," he added.

Last week, barangay officials and the management of Maribago Bluewater Resort recently unveiled the new name of the street in honor of  the late Austrian consulate of  Cebu, Arcadio Alegrado.

The said street is named as Calle De Arcadio C. Alegrado. A gold marker stands against a cemented wall, stating that the former consul is the "catalyst" of tourism and economic progress for transforming the fishing community into a "main tourism center" of the Mactan Island.

A memorandum of agreement for the perpetual road right of way was also signed last week.

According to Pangatungan, the old road was used for several years and did not have a Deed of Donation.

Pangatungan initiated an agreement with the Alegrado's three children: Julie Alegrado-Vergara, June Alegrdao-Ugarte and Jovy Alegrado.

"Without hesitation, na-realize ra pud ang akong proposal. Katung pag-September 11, mao ang wedding anniversary ni Sir Dodong ug sa iyahang asawa nga namatay na pud. Later on, amo na buhatan og programa aron ma-rehabilitate ang maong kalsada," Pangatungan said.

Present during the ceremony were the officials of the barangay, staff of the resort, and nearby residents. —(FREEMAN)
