Guess to whom, Salve A., utang na loob ni Bacoor City Mayor Lani Mercado, her screen first name, Lani?

Here’s the kuwento, Lani was maituturing na discovery ng other kilalang writer na si Nora Calderon, nagsusulat din dito sa PM (Pang-Masa).

Pinakiusapan daw si Nora ng parents ni Lani, then 16 years old, na tulungan itong mag-artista.

Well, to shorten the kuwento, dinala ni Nora si Lani sa El Oro office namin noon sa Escolta nina Ricky at Ronald Constantino.

Since, napansin naming may hitsura, even then, si Lani, dinala namin ito sa bahay ni Mother Lily (Monteverde) sa Greenhills. Ricky offered to drive us sa bahay ni Mother.

Mother Lily gave Lani a thorough look and quickly said, puwede siya (Lani).

“So, what’s her name?” “Victoria Hernandez po, Mother,” sagot ni Nora.

Na with a sigh, Mother Lily commented, “Ay, hindi tunog artista.”

Mercado was the screen apelyido being used then ng half-sister ni Lani, si Millie Mercado. “O, puwede na ‘yang Mercado dahil kaapelyido niya si Eddie Mercado (then kilalang radio at TV host),” ani Mother.

Now the first name, na ayon kay Mother Lily, kailangan maikli lang nang madaling matandaan. “How about Lani, Mother?” suggestion ni Ricky.

Ricky later revealed that the former Premiere Productions star, Lani Oteyza, once impressed him as an interviewee.

Lani, mestisahin, tall and trim of figure, was a former candy vendor sa labas ng Premiere Productions when a talent scout enticed her to join showbiz.

Well, Lani didn’t just end up a big star. She later married Al Quinn, then kilalang choreographer-director.

Lani, together with husband, Senator Bong Revilla, attended the “pa-siyam” na dasal for Ricky Lo, organized by writer cum publicist Peachy Guioguio, last Sunday.

The “pa-siyam” will end Thursday, May 13.
