GT-Metro, Philippine Navy bring smiles to Caloocan students

Students from Gregoria de Jesus Elemen- tary School show off their new eyeglasses.

MANILA, Philippines - The GT-Metro Foundation (GTMF), in partnership with the Philippine Navy- Naval Reserve Command (NAVRESCOM), recently distributed free prescription eye- glasses to public school students in Caloocan City through the “Salamin sa Maliwanag na Bukas” (Eyeglasses for a Bright Future) program.

A total of 662 students from Gregoria de Jesus Elementary School and Cecilio Apostol Elementary School underwent vi- sual screening in September with a licensed optometrist. Of those screened, 130 students from Gregoria de Jesus and 100 students from Cecilio Apostol received free prescrip- tion eyeglasses.

“These eyeglasses can help the students develop a love for reading and hopefully improve their studies and help them to achieve a better future,” said Gregoria de Jesus school principal Nimfa Tenefrancia.

NAVRESCOM head Commodore Primi- tivo Gopo, GTMF assistant program man- ager Joyce Talag, Metrobank Samson Road branch head Felipe Pera and C3 Caloocan branch head Mercy Serrano assisted in the distribution of glasses together with Tene- francia, Cecilio Apostol principal Leanora Dalluay and other NAVRESCOM officers.

The campaign is a nationwide eye check up and eyeglasses distribution program that aims to reach underprivileged communities where access to eye services is limited. Since 2010, the program has distributed nearly 12,000 eyeglasses to indigent adults and school-aged children nationwide.
