Streetwise

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Best known for being an athletic brand worldwide, Pony expands its reach and now, more than ever, becomes identified for its flair for streetwise footwear. With the brand’s thrust in giving merit to uniqueness and individualism, it has supported local musicians like Bamboo, Kitchie Nadal and Barbie Almalbis. And now, Pony’s latest choice to best symbolize its edgy and rock n’ roll vibe is the multi-talented and award-winning actor Baron Geisler.

Geisler has been in the entertainment industry for more than 12 years now. He started his acting career in Ang TV, a youth-oriented variety show on ABS-CBN. Known for being part of Koolits and Tabing Ilog, Geisler’s easy progression from being a child star to a more serious and versatile character actor did not come as a surprise since he is probably one of the best in his generation.

The proverbial “wild child” of his industry, Geisler has been very controversial but amidst all those controversies, he’s emerged more focused and determined to work on what he does best — his passion for acting. He was given two best supporting actor awards for his portrayal of Erning Toothpick, a character from the movie remake of Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story. He also played a meaty role in El Presidente. With at least three or four movies in line and playing one of the leads in the teleserye Kidlat on TV5, Geisler is very thankful for all the projects and support that have been coming his way.

“I’m not really sure why Pony chose me to be part of the roster of the awesome talents that it’s been supporting but I’m very happy that it did. I love Pony shoes — rugged and very me,” admits Geisler. “The people behind the brand probably see me as this no-nonsense actor with a rock n’ roll vibe, which I think is what the brand projects. I might not have the cleanest of reputations but when I do work, I do it well. I really try my best to deliver,” adds Geisler.

“Baron is very talented and he’s unconventional,” says Donna Santos, Pony’s marketing manager on why they decided to pick Geisler. “He has a distinct style. He is rebellious and a bit eccentric but in a good way, which is perfect for our thrust in Pony,” she adds.

Together with this venture, Pony is also celebrating its 40th anniversary. As part of the celebration, Santos says the brand will have exciting collaborations with New York-based accessories designers Dee & Ricky and photographer Ricky Powell.

“We will also be re-issuing the iconic styles of Pony, starting from the ‘70s to the  ‘80s,” reveals Santos.
