MANILA, Philippines - Aboitiz Construction Group Inc. (ACGI but better known as Metaphil) recently got a plaque of commendation from Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Region 7. TESDA recognized ACGI for its partnership through the Metaphil-TESDA Institute for Technical Training (MTiTT). The institute, managed by Metaphil, provides welding and pipefitting trainings and increases employability of graduates.

Present during the recognition were ACGI CEO and chair Roberto Aboitiz, COO and president Napoleon Pe Jr., CIO and vice president Zeny Novabos, MTiTT and ACGI trainers, MTiTT trainees, and TESDA Regional Director Rosanna Urdaneta and Regional Training Center Chief Mark Anthony Ylanan.

“We thank Metaphil for sharing its resources and expertise which resulted to a very effective training, development and placement of skilled manpower,” said Urdaneta.

Aboitiz told the trainees, “Learning never ends. Get better and better. Accept the pursuit for excellence. Pick up your bugsay [canoe paddle] and paddle toward your destination. Be the best welder possible.”

Pe, addressing TESDA, added, “With our quest for business expansion, we are looking for more skilled people; thus, we will pursue more partnerships with other skill training centers.”

MTiTT, started in 2008, has trained close to 800 students. Over 400 of the graduates are currently employed by ACGI. The institute has become a showcase in TESDA as it is the first and successful linkage in the country between TESDA and industry.

ACGI has partnerships with other training centers such as Bogolites, Sister of Mary’s Boys Town (Cebu), universities like USJR and UC and even technical-vocational high schools like Subangdaku High School. Metaphil continues to link with more schools and training centers, including TESDA regional centers. This training framework, aimed at addressing the country’s unemployment problem, is an effective way of corporate social responsibility.
