27 responders finish water rescue training
CEBU, Philippines — Mandaue City is strengthening its capacity to respond to water-related emergencies, with 27 responders completing a five-day Water Search and Rescue (WASAR) training aimed at equipping them with skills to conduct rescue operations in challenging water conditions.
The trainees from the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO) and its Emergency Response Team (ERT) in Barangay Opao completed the training held from October 19 to 23 at a resort in Lapu-Lapu City.
The training culminated in a final challenge that required participants to swim one mile and demonstrate the rescue techniques they had learned.
The trainees faced additional difficulties from unfavorable weather and large waves during the final swimming exercise, testing their endurance and ability to operate in challenging conditions.
Of the 40 trainees who took part in the training, 27 completed the requirements and received certificates.
The training was intended to strengthen the responders’ ability to handle water-related emergencies, including search and rescue operations that may be needed during disasters and other incidents involving bodies of water.
MCDRRMO Chief Buddy Ybañez expressed gratitude to the trainees for persevering through the demanding exercises, emphasizing the importance of completing the training despite the physical challenges.
“The harder the struggle, the greater the triumph,” Ybañez said.
He also thanked Mayor Thadeo Ouano for supporting programs intended to improve the preparedness and capabilities of the city’s emergency responders.
The trainees, meanwhile, expressed their gratitude to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for providing guidance and assistance throughout the training.
MCDRRMO Operations Head Erwin Alivio, PCG personnel PO1 Jocelito Y. Tequillo and PO1 Vicente Z. Gayomale Jr., PCG Commander Gresa J. Candongo, and other MCDRRMO personnel witnessed the activity. (CEBU NEWS)
