MANILA, Philippines — Cases of “hijack profile” scams surged last month, the Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) reported on Monday.

The scam involves a perpetrator gaining unauthorized access to a social media account, then using it to send messages to the account owner’s contacts to solicit financial assistance under false pretenses, the PNP-ACG said.

At least 178 cases were recorded from November 2023 up to last month.

“February 2024 marked a significant peak, with 89 cases reported, indicating a concerning upward trend in this form of cybercrime,” the PNP-ACG said.

PNP-ACG director Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia emphasized the importance of safeguarding one’s social media account against hijack profile scams.

“If you suspect that your profile has been hijacked, immediately report it to the platform or service provider, take steps to secure your account and notify relevant authorities to avoid potential legal liabilities that may arise from unauthorized access or misuse of your online identity,” Hernia said.
