The bridge of love

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

One of the extraordinary projects under former president Ferdinand Marcos’ administration is the San Juanico Bridge that connects the provinces of Samar and Leyte. It is known to be the longest bridge in the Philippines and was completed in December of 1972.

Last Oct. 19, 2022, and to further boost the economy as it was originally created to do by connecting both provinces and the rest of the Philippines, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hailed the San Juanico Bridge Lighting Project, signifying economic opportunities that could be brought about as the tourism industry recovers.

While the San Juanico bridge was a testimonial of the late president Marcos’ love for his wife and former first lady Imelda Marcos, it continues to pave the way for sustainable and lasting influence in the lives of every Filipino where, as PBBM says, value, grace and purpose is a great addition to our nation by filling the gaps through connectivity.

On this special occasion, the President explained to Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan that the San Juanico Bridge was built not just because his mother hailed from Leyte but rather, that the San Juanico was built for Samar in order to give it some of the advantages that Tacloban has and that the province of Leyte has. With its new lights and after so many disasters, the San Juanico bridge is pointed out to be a symbol of strength, with the hope of attracting more investments into Samar and Leyte.

Not too long ago, the UNITEAM held their “salubong” on this bridge, making it the longest show of strength by two formidable leaders-to-be. As the bridge continues to be known as a symbol of love as it connects the sister islands of Samar and Leyte, it is also considered as one of the most beautifully-designed bridges in the Philippines, so much so that this love connection is said to bear the initials “L” and “S” from an aerial view.

Like the north and south connection, on the other hand, the bridge remains strong after more than three years of delay due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s time for Samar to shine, as Governor Sharee Ann Tan said, as the success of their neighbors continue to motivate them to become better.

The San Juanico Bridge Aesthetic Lighting Project is the first of its kind in the country, with a light show that can be customized depending on the occasion. As the President said, “Every day henceforth, this bridge will stand – as it has stood since the beginning – as a staunch reminder of the rewards awaiting our collaborative endeavors.”

The best is yet to come.
