Offering

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

To share or give something to someone takes in various forms, ways and motivations. We can provide our time for a worthy cause, possessions for a laudable purpose. We can definitely share our knowledge and skills for the encouragement and development of others.

To offer oneself means sharing one’s talents and skills for others so they will be inspired and ready to take their own track of discovering their uniqueness. They need to start knowing their attributes and potentials as they journey towards discovering their own selves.

All that we have to live as per our true nature and to satisfy our mission on earth is already available to us, as our gifts. Talents resemble endowments that we received when we were born. They are to be found within ourselves. Some of them have been grown already, others are as yet holding back, waiting to be found.

In any case, if we want to be happy in life, we will have to start expressing our most important talents. These key talents are an essential part of our mission on earth. The very reason we have received them is for us to offer them to others, to use them to help others and this way find satisfaction for ourselves.

And for this year, for the past five years, I have been participating in the Sinulog Film Festival, either as a lead role or even playing bit roles. And I don’t mind at all whether we lose or win, it’s my involvement with young artists that makes my participation significant. Winning comes just as a bonus. It would be hypocritical for me if it’s okay not to bring home a trophy because winning at the same time means recognition of the acting level for a select jury. And so I take it as a challenge when an award is given because such recognition would give me the credibility I need to inspire aspiring artists.

And since its inception, the Sinulog Film Festival continues to provide local artists the venue to hone their skills and entice neophytes to discover what they can offer through fresh ideas, stories, and approaches to filmmaking.

We will not stop celebrating our unique stories as a people. This is a potent way that the future generation can trace back and give due recognition to what we have done in paving their way, a legacy we can truly be proud of.

It is not anymore a secret though that the way to greatness is to discover what we were born to do in life and then do it. We must find our gifts and talents. We don’t wait for the opportunity but rather find it or make a way to reach out to others because if there is one sin—or rather one waste—it is not doing what we have the inclination or gift for.

Everyone has talent. What's uncommon is the courage to tail it to the dim spots where it leads. There are difficulties en route; determination clears it. For budding artists; trust in yourself. You are braver than you might think, more talented than you know, and more capable than you envision.
