The parish priests of the Diocese of Cebu (1880s) Part 11

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The Diocese of Cebu in the 1700s had jurisdiction over all the islands and provinces of the Visayas and Mindanao, even reaching to the Marianas Islands.

The parishes were administered by missionaries coming from the orders of the Augustinians, Franciscans, Jesuits, Recollects, and the secular clergy.

The list is taken from the book of Fr. Felipe Redondo in 1886:

Fr. Jose Abad, Recollect, Jimenez, Misamis.

Jimenez, also then called as Palilan (because it is situated beside the Palilan River), was erected as a parish in 1859 under the patronage of St. John the Baptist, separating from its mother parish, Misamis (now Ozamiz City).

Servando Seoane, Secular Clergy, Jindang, Leyte

Hindang was erected as a parish by Diocesan decree, under the patronage of St. Michael Archangel. On March 14, 1861, through superior approval on September 17, 1860, it separated from its mother parish, Hilongos.

Fr. Florentino Garcia, Franciscan, Jinunangan, Leyte.

Created as a parish by diocesan decree on May 28, 1851, it is under the patronage of the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul. It separated from its mother church, Abuyog.

Fr. Toribio Sanchez, Recollect, Laci, Siquijor

Laci (Lazi) was erected as parish by diocesan decree on August 8, 1857, under the patronage of San Isidro Labrador. It separated from its mother parish, Siquijor.

Fr. Eustaquio Paniagua, Franciscan, La-Granja, Samar

Erected as a parish by diocesan decree of May 22, 1867, under the patronage of St. James the Elder. It separated from its mother parish, Bobon and Calbayog.

Fr. Felipe Vasquez, Franciscan, Lanang, Samar.

It is under the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua. It said that from 1785 it was a visita until 1851when a part of Guian was added to it and it was erected as a town, separating from Borongan.

Fr. Angel Pulido, Francisan, Lauang, Samar.

The parish priest could not provide the date of its creation but according to him there is a Book of Matrimony provided by the Jesuit provincial, Fr. Eguidio Olban, that dates back to 1733. It separated from its mother parish, Palapag, when the Franciscan fathers began to administer the island of Samar. The parish is under the patronage of San Miguel Archangel. It had the visitas of Burabud, Calomotan, and Balac (island) and the barrios of Bayog and Cabayagan. (To be continued)
