No slippers

BET. She placed her bet on a number on the roulette table and prayed. It was money she had saved. When her prayers were heard, she got up and went straight to a department store to buy a friend a pair of shoes.

SLIPPERS. The friend is a student, the daughter of poor parents from the province.  The student has been wearing slippers to school since she entered college. She said she would remove her shoes if it rained and wear her slippers again.
