Festivals galore at CCP

SUNDRY STROKES -

CCP President Nestor O. Jardin and Anvil Publishing are sending out invitation to the launch of “Between Tiger and Dragon,” a history of Philippine relations with China and Taiwan by Claude Haberer, on June 17, 6 p.m. at the CCP main theater lobby.

The 2009 National Music Competition for Young Artists (Namcya) is now open for entries. Gala night for awardees will be in November. Namcya chairperson Veronica Tapia-Merk says “Namcya brings out the best in our Filipino youth who are capable of not only creating music for their generation but also of playing music by the masters.”

Categories are piano, voice, choir, rondalla, dance, guitar, brasses and traditional music. For the last 36 years, Namcya has been discovering, exposing and educating talents. This year’s theme is “Creating an environment of the spirit and the world through music and the arts.”

By paving the way for the freedom of expression and dance and discovering inherent Filipino talent nationwide, Namcya, according to Merk, can claim to be the only competition of its kind. Dr. Ramon Acoymo, Namcya secretary general, says that unlike most competitions, “Namcya does not have winners and losers in the usual sense.” Those who do not receive top awards merely require further honing of their skills.

Turandot cancelled

The Korean production of the opera Turandot which was set for June, has been cancelled. The Seoul Romance Philharmonic Orchestra, the Korean organizer of the opera, requested the CCP to move the show from its original date to November so as to coincide with the state visit of the Korean President. However the CCP cannot accommodate the request because it is fully booked for that month. Considering the past preparations, what a pity!

Brave new works

Festivals billed as “Brave New Works 09” will present ground-breaking performances, exhibitions, screenings from June to July as part of CCP’s 40th anniversary celebration.

The festivals, which underlie CCP’s aim to encourage and showcase original Filipino creations draw provocative works from poets, playwrights, choreographers, composers, visual artists and independent filmmakers. Six festivals converge to showcase poetry-in-performance, modern theater, contemporary dance, new symphonic music, painting, sculpture, installation, multi-media and digital feature film.

On June 10, June 24 and July 1 at 6 p.m. oral tradition, protest poetry and lesbian-gay works will top bill the WordJam Spoken Word Festival at the Barbariba, Trellis 2, CCP Complex. The festival also includes a storytelling session for children on July 8, 8 a.m. at the CCP main theater lobby. The session, open to the public, is undertaken by the CCP Literary Arts Division.

On June 23 to July 5, the Virgin Labfest, a festival of new plays (untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged) by emerging and well-known playwrights, directors and actors, will be held. A joint venture by the CCP, Tanghalang Pilipino and the Writers’ Bloc, Inc., with the support of NCCA, the festival, now on its fifth year, has garnered a solid reputation for its intriguing and provocative one-act plays from both young and old authors.

From June 25 to July 5, Filipino and foreign dance artists will meet at the WiFibody Independent Contemporary Dance Festival which will feature a choreographers competition, galas, dance on film and workshops to encourage new talent and experimentation.

Thirteen Artists’ Awards

On July 9, the following 13 young artists will be honored and their group show simultaneously opened: Buen Calubayan, Christina Dy, Don Djerassi Dalmacio, Patty Eustaquio, Kawayan de Guia, Winner Jumalon, Raquel de Loyola, Raya Martin, Iggy Rodriguez, Don Salubayba, Jaypee Samson, Pamela Yan and MM Yu. Jurors were Eileen Legaspi Ramirez, Lao Lianben and Mark Jimenez. Wire Tuazon will curate the exhibit; Louie Cordero will design the trophy.

Musik Underkonstruktion, featuring new symphonic works and co-produced by Metro Manila Community Orchestra, is set for July 15.
