The way of Mary

AT 3 A.M. - Fr. James Reuter, SJ -

The Way of Mary was a dream of the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin. He drew inspiration from the prayer markers found on roads leading to famous pilgrimage sites in Europe. He wanted prayer markers, road shrines, to portray the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, from the shrine of Our Lady of Peace on Edsa to the shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo.

Built on a stretch of 14 kilometers along Ortigas Avenue — one of the busiest thoroughfares in Metro Manila — the shrines would remind the millions of Filipinos, who pass that way, of the mother of Our Lord and their mother, Mama Mary.

Late in 2004, a group of Marian devotees pooled talent and resources and a Board of Trustees was created for the Way of Mary. They were faced with the problem of the design of the shrines, and the choice of an artist to do the sculpture. They wanted only one artist to do all 20 images, telling the beautiful story of Mary and her Son…. They chose Nemi Miranda.

The Mysteries were sculptured on steel and concrete, four feet wide and six feet high, mounted on a six foot granite clad pedestal.  Each  shrine stands 12 feet tall, and is lighted dramatically….. The pedestals were designed by Joey Amistoso.

To get 20 sites on which to build the shrines, along a very busy avenue, all on one side, and spaced approximately 700 meters apart, seemed impossible. But the Board met with the Mayors of the four municipalities involved — Pasig, Cainta, Taytay and Antipolo. The best locations were chosen.

Ten shrines are located on public land. Ten more are built on private property. Permission to construct was secured from the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Finally, on April 27, 2005, His Eminence Jaime L. Cardinal Sin blessed the Shrine of the Annunciation on the sidewalk of the Edsa chapel — it was the beginning of the Way of Mary.

On June 7, 2005, the Shrine of the Coronation was blessed, on the patio of the Antipolo Cathedral.

Cardinal Sin died on June 21, 2005, at 6:17 a.m.

On April 4, 2007, all 20 shrines were finished and blessed. Many critics felt that the whole venture was a mistake. They said: “Street children will cover each image with graffiti…. They will paint mustaches on the Virgin Mary…. The figures will be  splattered with mud…. or chipped and broken with stones.”

But this never happened!…. On the contrary, people came to every image along the way, and placed flowers on it!…. Street vendors hung garlands of sampaguitas around the neck of their Mama Mary….. The Board had to hire attendants to remove the flowers when they had withered.

And far from desecrating the Mysteries, ordinary common people came to each shrine and cleaned it carefully. They treated every Mystery with reverence!

The Way of Mary has been so successful, so appealing, that the Board has created a Mini-Edition of the 20 Mysteries, cast personally by the same original artist — Nemi Miranda. They are cast in high quality resin, to stand all weather conditions.

Each Mystery is 19 inches high, 13 inches wide, and two inches thick. It is light weight, and can easily be hung on walls, or placed on pedestals indoors or outdoors.

They are available in gold or bronze finish, or on antique wood finish — hand painted by Angono artists.

This Mini Way of Mary is becoming very popular in schools, in religious houses of formation, and in the gardens of private homes. They are, in a way, like the Stations of the Cross. Except that, in The Way of Mary, you meditate on all the mysteries of the Rosary.
