Our world beaters come mostly from sports, never politics

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   -
"Ber" months start from September to December. "Beer" months from January to December. Hik! Hik! Hik!

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova wrapped up the US Tennis Open. By the way, where is my favorite fashion model Anna Kournikova who also dabbled in tennis?

Biboy Rivera won the world bowling championship. A few days later, Bata Reyes pocketed the IPT World 8-ball billiards title. Prior to this, Bata and Django Bustamante also won the World Cup of Pool championship. It's always from sports where Pinoy world beaters come. Never from politics, which Pinoys are supposed to be masters of.

One afternoon recently I managed to visit the Cebu Cathedral, my walking problem notwithstanding. I sat beside a handicapped woman whose pair of crutches leaned on the pew close to me.

The next day rumor had it that I was seen using crutches when I went to the Cathedral. A former TF employee called me to offer the pair of expensive crutches, which her brother had slightly used.

"Sa Europe ni gipalit. May ning ibanos-banos mo sa imong crutches," she said.

My friend Nick P. said he overheard some hangers on - also my senior citizen friends - at the French Baker talking about me and my crutches.

"Nahibong ko kay hibaw man ko di man gani ka mogamit og sungkod (walking cane), crutches na ka nuon," Nick said.

I had to explain how the rumor began. And Nick P. said, quoting Plautus (who he?): "I know nothing swifter in life than the voice of rumor."

Books (novels) that are called "tear-jerkers" are more salable than action novels in the Philippines," said a book trader in Hong Kong.

Those tear-jerkers must include my book - I mean my bankbook. Every time I read the contents, I get teary-eyed.

A resident of Liloan wants this known to officials concerned (if they don't already know): "There's a portion of the Consolacion-Liloan highway which is very dark at night. Way electric post kang makita along this portion of the highway."

"Ampay kaayo ning dapita sa mga jeepney holduppers," she said.
