MANILA, Philippines – The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) has chosen Teresita Sy-Coson of the SM Group of Companies as the recipient of its “Management Man of the Year” award for 2016.

The award is given by MAP to individuals in the business community or government who have attained unquestioned distinction in the practice of management and for contributing to the country’s progress.

Previous awardees include tycoons such as Manuel Pangilinan, George S.K. Ty, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Erramon Aboitiz and Tony Tan Caktiong, among others.

Last year’s recipient was Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco Jr.

Sy-Coson will be the second woman recipient of the award. Former Philippine Economic Zone Authority director general Lilia de Lima won the award in 2010 together with business leader Ramon del Rosario Jr.

According to MAP, Sy-Coson was chosen for steering the SM Group’s retail business to greater heights with her over four decades of retail experience.

It also cited her valuable contribution in sustaining BDO’s position as the leading bank in the Philippines.

Sy-Coson was also recognized for her contribution to re-shaping national values through her track record of integrity, professional competence and strong leadership.

The MAP said its Management Man of the Year award follows a thorough and stringent selection process. The criteria for the award include integrity, leadership and management qualities, contribution to nation building and values formation, effective stewardship within the confines of the highest standard of business and management practice.
