'Teleserye' now part of Oxford English Dictionary

MANILA, Philippines — Wonderful news to all the Filipino "teleserye" fanatics.

After adding "Kilig" to their updated list of new words for March, the Oxford English Dictionary has also added "teleserye."

Before the term has been coined, Filipinos used the term "telenovelas" and "soap operas." It was only in the late '90s that the term became popular.

A definitive record of the English language, the Oxford Dictionary defines "teleserye" as a television soap opera. "Like 'kilig,' its roots is from the Tagalog language," it said.

Widely regarded as an authority in Language, the dictionary's committee considers foreign words that are popularly used with the English language when updating their list four times a year.
