What Pinoys do when the lights go out

MANILA, Philippines – Establishments shut down, cellular phones and computers went dead, traffic slowed to a crawl, and food spoiled in refrigerators – upshot of a power outage, which about 4.6 million Manila Electric Company consumers have experienced for the past few days due to typhoon Glenda’s wind lashing and thunder roaring.

As typhoon “Glenda” swept through the Philippines, power supply for the regions have dwindled, which lead to the implementation of three- to five-hour rotating brownouts in Metro Manila on Thursday.

Electricity has become a public good. It has been a vital part of functioning society. So what happens when the power goes out for couple of hours or days? Being known for resiliency and creativity, the Filipinos have found different ways to spend the dim nights amidst the outrage of Glenda.
