City Hall acquires P24-million mechanized sweepers
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government has expanded its sanitation fleet with the acquisition of two brand-new mechanized street sweeper trucks worth ?24 million to strengthen road-cleaning operations across the city.
Mayor Nestor Archival inspected the units yesterday with City Councilor Paul Labra, Chief of Staff Kenneth Siasar, and City Administrator Atty. Briccio Boholst, underscoring the city’s push to modernize its environmental sanitation program.
According to procurement documents released by the Bids and Awards Committee, the two trucks were allocated ?24 million following an open competitive bidding process in June 2026 under the New Government Procurement Act (Republic Act No. 12009).
Archival said the trucks would primarily be deployed along major thoroughfares at dawn, when traffic is light, to maximize efficiency.
“Importante nga atong atimanon ang kalimpyo sa atong dakbayan,” Archival said.
However, the mayor stressed that public cooperation remains essential to keeping the city clean.
“Beyond providing the necessary equipment and resources, we also need the cooperation of every Cebuano. Let us avoid littering, dispose of our waste properly, and keep our streets free from garbage,” he added.
The acquisition comes as Cebu City continues to face longstanding waste management and sanitation challenges.
Earlier this year, the Department of Public Works and Highways provided heavy equipment to remove silt from rivers and drainage systems clogged with garbage. Meanwhile, the Eco-Station at the South Road Properties has been diverting tons of waste daily from landfills.
City officials said that these initiatives, along with the deployment of the mechanized sweepers, are expected to help improve street cleanliness and promote a more sustainable urban environment amid the city’s continuing waste disposal problems.
The new trucks are also expected to ease the workload of sanitation personnel and enhance the city’s capacity to maintain cleanliness in public spaces.
Archival reiterated that the success of these efforts depends not only on government resources but also on the collective responsibility of Cebuanos to keep their city free from garbage. — (FREEMAN)
