LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Philippines — The La Trinidad municipal government has ordered a restaurant in Barangay Wangal to explain why it should not be sanctioned after the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) confirmed that cooked meat samples from the establishment tested positive for dog DNA.

Mayor Roderick Awingan gave the restaurant owner three days to respond to the show-cause order.

Two other establishments were directed to explain allegations that they sold meat from illegally slaughtered or diseased animals, which officials referred to as “hot meat.”

Awingan said businesses found to have violated food safety and other laws could have their business permits suspended or revoked.

The municipal government is scheduled to hold a case conference next week with the NMIS, Department of Agriculture and animal welfare advocate Amadeo Degay to determine possible legal action over the alleged sale of meat from illegally slaughtered animals, including dog meat.

The NMIS Molecular Biology Laboratory earlier confirmed the presence of dog DNA in two cooked meat samples purchased from Wangal restaurant.
