Probe set on Surigao broadcaster’s slay

Mark Ernest Villeza - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered an investigation into the killing of broadcaster-turned-councilor Gerry Campos in Surigao del Sur on Dec. 6.

Campos, a former station director of Radio Mindanao Network in Butuan City and manager of Radyo Serbato, was stabbed while walking near a gasoline station in Barangay Sta. Cruz.

Police arrested a 42-year-old suspect during a follow-up operation.

Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police force remains committed to protecting members of the press and will not tolerate violence or the culture of impunity.

“The PNP condemns this attack. We assure the family and friends of Gerry Campos that we will look into this case to determine the motive and hold accountable those behind this senseless killing,” Nartatez said.
