SUV driver’s license suspended over Tondo crash

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended for 90 days the license of a sport utility vehicle driver who rammed six vehicles in Tondo, Manila on Aug. 20 and injured five people, the Department of Transportation said yesterday.
The DOTr cited the LTO show-cause order on driver Xian Wei Hong.
According to an investigation report, the vehicle reached the corner of Cavite Street in Blumentritt when it rear-ended a taxi and collided with a wagon.
However, Hong reportedly continued driving and hit a motorcycle and a passenger jeepney at Aurora Boulevard. The impact forced the jeepney to crash into a pedicab, which subsequently rammed a van.
All five injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment.
The LTO noted in its order that “the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.”
Hong is required to appear before the LTO intelligence and investigation division on Sept. 1 and submit a verified explanation on why he should not be charged for reckless driving and driving under the influence of liquor or narcotic drugs as well as for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
The LTO warned that failure to comply would be considered a waiver of Hong’s right to be heard.
