SC allows Zambales gubernatorial aspirant to run

MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to allow Chito Balintay, a member of the Indigenous Peoples of Zambales, to run for governor in the May 12 elections and include his name in the official ballots.
The office of the SC spokesperson said the high tribunal reversed a Comelec ruling rejecting Balintay’s certificate of candidacy.
The high tribunal said the poll body committed grave abuse of discretion when it did not allow Balintay to file his COC.
Balintay filed his COC on the last day of the filing period and 25 minutes prior to closing time. His COC was incomplete and he was advised to complete his documents. It was three minutes past the deadline when he returned.
In ruling in favor of Balintay, the SC said the Comelec should reexamine whether its rules serve the interest of justice and fair play.
Sought for comment, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the poll body has included Balintay’s name in the ballot
