MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Davao de Oro yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 2:58 a.m., was recorded 35 kilometers south of New Bataan town.

Phivolcs said the temblor was tectonic in nature and had a depth of focus of 13 kms.

The quake was recorded at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Davao Oriental as well as in New Bataan, Maragusan and Pantukan in Davao de Oro.

The shaking was felt at Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Nabunturan, Compostela, Monkayo, Mawab, Montevista, Laak, Mabini and Maco in Davao de Oro.

Intensity 3 was recorded in Davao and Tagum in Davao del Norte and Intensity 1 in Bislig and Tandag in Surigao del Sur.

Instrumental Intensity 4 was  recorded in Nabunturan.

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected from the quake.
