Chlorine leak downs 8 in Malabon

At least eight residents experienced difficulty breathing due to a chlorine leak in Malabon at around noon yesterday.

At least 300 affected residents were evacuated due to the incident.

Among the injured were children aged 13, nine, four and three years old and a nine-month-old baby, according to the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Three adults aged 23, 25 and 42 were also reported among the victims. The victims were brought to the Ospital ng Malabon due to difficulty breathing.

The leak in Barangay Tinajeros was traced to the warehouse of business establishment Jovares Gas and Acetylene, which is involved in manufacturing acetylene and oxygen products, Tinajeros barangay captain Ryan Geronimo said in a dzBB interview.

The leak may have been caused by the use of old facilities and lack of upkeep, he added.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the leak. The city government first reported the incident as an ammonia leak before clarifying that it was a chlorine leak.
