Magnitudes 5.2, 5.9 quakes hit Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.2 and 5.9, struck Sarangani town in Davao Occidental yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the magnitude 5.2 quake hit 264 kilometers south of Balut at around 2:17 a.m. It was tectonic in nature and had a depth of 76 kms.

The second quake, which had a depth of 27 kms, struck 303 kms south of Balut Island at around 10:13 a.m.

Phivolcs said there was no tsunami alert as well as damage or aftershocks due to the quakes.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said it recorded 42 aftershocks of the magnitude 7.0 quake that struck Davao Occidental on Jan. 18.

Four quakes with magnitudes of 4.3 and higher were recorded yesterday.

A 4.6-magnitude quake struck at about 1:06 a.m., two magnitudes 4.8 at 9:10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and a 4.3-magnitude earthquake at 12:02 p.m.
