DMW: Hungary, Portugal, Romania ready to hire OFWs

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Highly skilled overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have more market options in the coming year, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced yesterday.

Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople said Hungary, Portugal and Romania have expressed their desire to hire Filipino workers.

“These countries want to start bilateral talks with the Philippine government as early as the first quarter of 2023,” Ople said.

She said those emerging markets are “pretty safe” for OFWs and would be covered by bilateral agreements.

Germany and South Korea also want to hire more Filipino workers, according to Ople. Aside from nurses, Ople said Germany is in need of plumbers and service workers.

“There’s a demand for skilled workers. Hindi lang for domestic helpers,” she said.

Ople said the DMW would allocate funding of P1.2 billion next year to help distressed OFWs pursue legal charges against erring employers.
