Magnitude-5.5 quake jolts Abra
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A magnitude-5.5 earthquake jolted Abra and nearby provinces before dawn yesterday.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 2:27 a.m., was located in Pilar town, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs).
The quake was felt at Intensity 5 in Pilar, Bangued and Bucay as well as in Vigan, Ilocos Sur..
Intensity 4 was felt in Banayoyo in Ilocos Sur and San Fernando in La Union.
Intensity 3 was recorded in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Intensity 2 in the towns of Cagayan, Gonzaga, Laoag and Pasuquin in Ilocos Norte.
Aftershocks were felt in Pilar and Villavisiosa, state seismologists said.
Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said no airport in Northern Luzon was affected by the quake.
CAAP director general Capt.Manuel Antonio Tamayo said all commercial flights in Ilocos region and Cagayan Valley were safe and operational. – Michael Punongbayan, Rudy Santos
