Sibugay NBI chief killed in accidental firing

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The chief of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)’s field office in Zamboanga Sibugay was killed after a gun he was cleaning went off on Saturday.

Akmat Sampang, 59, was declared dead on arrival at Zamboanga Peninsula Provincial Hospital due to a gunshot to the chest, police reported yesterday.

The incident occurred at around 8 a.m. at Sampang’s house in Barangay Poblacion in Ipil town, according to Maj. Shellamie Chang, information chief of the Zamboanga region police.

Sampang’s partner told investigators that she last saw him cleaning his service firearm, before she went out for an errand.

When she returned, she said she saw Sampang lying bloodied on the floor.

Sampang’s partner said she asked their neighbors to help her bring him to the hospital. Investigation is ongoing.
