MANILA, Philippines — Local government executives should strictly enforce minimum public health standards during public events and gatherings during Holy Week, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said yesterday.

He said wearing of face masks in public and enclosed places, washing of hands and observing physical distancing should be implemented.

Año said officials of local government units (LGUs) should ensure that gatherings would not turn into superspreader events.

“We do not want the figures to go up again after the Holy Week because of laxity on the part of LGUs and non-adherence to minimum public health standards by the public,” he said.

Año said LGU officials should be ready to deal with health and security concerns that may arise with more people gathering and going out of their homes.

He said local peace and order councils should be convened to prepare for the movement of people and coordinate with law enforcement units.
