MANILA, Philippines — More than 290,000 passengers took the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 on the third day of the month-long free ride program, the MRT-3 management reported yesterday.

This was the highest ridership tally recorded by the rail line in two years since the MRT-3 reopened during the pandemic.

A total of 293,290 commuters boarded the MRT-3 trains on March 30.

Passengers can avail themselves of free MRT-3 rides until April 30.

The management posted a surge in passenger count with the deployment of four-car train sets during rush hour.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomed the rehabilitation of the MRT-3.

CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said the upgraded MRT-3 is timely amid the soaring oil prices, higher costs of public transportation and the return of employees to their workplaces.

“The right to mobility, which includes the right to travel safely, conveniently and reliably, is an essential right that impacts the daily lives of ordinary Filipinos. It is also a significant factor for economic development,” De Guia said. – Janvic Mateo
