Davao workers seek wage hike

MANILA, Philippines — The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) is set to file today a petition seeking a salary increase for minimum wage earners in Davao.

The TUCP said the current daily wage of P396 in the region is not enough for workers to buy their basic needs.

The provinces of Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental and Compostela Valley comprise Davao region.

The TUCP had earlier filed petitions before the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards in the National Capital Region and Central Visayas.

Ten wage petitions are pending before the regional wage boards in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas.

In a virtual briefing on Monday, National Wages and Productivity Commission executive director Criselda Sy gave assurance that the wage boards are expediting the deliberation of pending petitions.

“We impressed upon them the request of the secretary and Congress to fasttrack the review and process of wage adjustments in the regions. We take note of the considerations such as the current crisis between Ukraine and Russia which resulted in oil price hikes,” Sy said.
