Mandaluyong fire leaves 1 dead

MANILA, Philippines — A 32-year-old man died in a fire that hit a two-story apartment in Mandaluyong City yesterday.

Allen Villanueva was asleep in his room on the second floor of an apartment along Basilan street in Barangay Malamig when the fire broke out at around 7:32 a.m.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire reached first alarm before it was doused by firefighters at around 8:13 a.m.

Villanueva died from second-degree burns. The BFP said another individual whom it did not identify was injured.

Arson probers have yet to determine the cause of the fire, which destroyed P3.85 million worth of property.

The BFP said 10 families were displaced in the fire.

A total of 37 fire trucks responded to the scene, 12 from the BFP and 25 from the local government and volunteer groups.

9 families homeless in Tondo blaze

In Manila, at least nine families lost their homes in a fire that reached second alarm in Tondo on Wednesday night.

Five houses were razed in the fire along Velasquez street in Barangay 96, according to the BFP. The fire destroyed P50,000 worth of property before was put out at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
