Negros Oriental seeks alert level downgrade

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging and Infectious Diseases (IATF) should reconsider its decision to place Negros Oriental under Alert Level 4, according to Gov. Roel Degamo.

He said hospitals in the province are overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients who came from Siquijor and southern Cebu and not from Negros Oriental.

As of Oct. 25, the occupancy rate of hospitals in Negros Oriental was at 98 percent.

Degamo said placing the province under Alert Level 4 is “inappropriate,” noting that its active cases are decreasing.

The provincial health office said 163,234 residents have been fully vaccinated while 171,182 have received their first dose.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental provincial IATF action officer Rayfrando Diaz said the resumption of bus operations between Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental may not be possible at this time.

“We hope that their situation will improve soon in Negros Oriental. Once it is safe, we will resume normal transportation within this island,” Diaz said.

Negros Occidental is under Alert Level 2.
