MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) has been ordered to review its rules and regulations following the death of a cadet allegedly at the hands of an upperclassman last Thursday.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said he ordered PNPA director Maj. Gen. Rhoderick Armamento and the directorate for human resources and doctrine development to review the current rules, regulations and academic policies to prevent violence among cadets.
The order came after Cadet 2nd Class Steven Maingat reportedly beat to death Cadet 3rd Class George Carl Magsayo.
The victim was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
“We want to understand why, despite stern warnings, this happened yet again and resulted in the death of a cadet,” Eleazar said in a statement.
Eleazar assured the parents of Magsayo that the PNP would never promote the culture of hazing or any form of violence among the cadets in the academy.
“We believe that if this isn’t addressed sooner, this kind of violent mindset would be carried on by the cadets when they enter the PNP, BJMP, and the BFP and would cause problems to these organizations,” Eleazar said, referring to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and Bureau of Fire Protection.
