2 dead in Mindoro jail shooting

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Two persons were killed and five others were wounded when an inmate went on a shooting rampage at the provincial jail in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro before dawn on Tuesday.

Lowelyn Mendoza, 36, and Edison Sampaga, 41, died on the way to the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital.

Jeffrey delos Reyes, 37; Christian Licuan, 45; Hector Abes, 41; Mark de la Cruz, 42, and Alberto Ebueza, 21, were taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Lt. Col. Imelda Tolentino, Mimaropa police spokesperson, said Sampaga was armed with a 9mm pistol when he shot Mendoza then fired at the other victims several times before shooting himself.

An investigation to determine the motive and how and where Sampaga got the gun is ongoing.
