Pasay cops probed for extortion

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar yesterday ordered an investigation of alleged extortion activities of some police officers in Pasay City.

Eleazar directed the Southern Police District to look into the alleged extortion activities of police officers manning a checkpoint along Andrews Avenue.

Based on information he received from netizens, Eleazar said the police officers would flag down motorists for allegedly disregarding traffic signs.

One netizen said a police officer threatened to put them in jail for disrespecting him.

Eleazar warned he will not hesitate to sanction the police officers who are abusing their authority and taking advantage of the situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
