MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice has warned the public not to respond to a fake e-mail address posing as DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra’s and asking for financial assistance.

Guevarra said he might seek the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in tracking down the people behind this money-making scheme using his name.

“The DOJ Office of Cybercrime is looking into it. If necessary, I will seek help from the NBI,” Guevarra said.

In an advisory last week, the DOJ said an online scammer posed as the justice secretary using the e-mail address osecmig1@gmail.com.

“The e-mail was used to send messages to several recipients asking for money supposedly to buy iTunes gift cards as donations to patients of hospice care centers,” the DOJ said.

Guevarra’s office only uses osec@doj.gov.ph and osecmig@gmail.com  as its official e-mail addresses.
