Sulu police chief slaian by subordinate

John Unson - The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – The police director of Sulu was allegedly killed by one of his men in a gun attack in Jolo at about 4:20 p.m. yesterday.

Initial investigation showed Col. Michael Bawayan Jr., 49, was inspecting a quarantine checkpoint in Barangay Asturias in Jolo when S/Sgt. Imran Jilah shot him several times following an altercation.

One of Bawayan’s escorts managed to return fire, killing the 43-year-old Jilah.

Bawayan was declared dead on arrival at the Sulu Provincial Hospital.

Sources said Bayawan had admonished Jilah, but it was not clear what offense the suspect committed.

Brig. Gen. Eden Ugale, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region police director, ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

Bawayan was among those charged under the principle of command responsibility in connection with the killing of four Army intelligence officers by members of the Jolo police in June last year. – Emmanuel Tupas, Roel Pareño
