MANILA, Philippines — Smart Communications Inc. is increasing its network coverage at all stations of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 to better serve commuters using the LRT-2.

Smart said it has installed microsites to enhance network coverage at the LRT-2, which has 11 stations from Santolan in Pasig to Recto in Manila.

The microsites will provide additional LTE coverage and capacity to enable faster mobile data speeds for commuters.

“This is part of our efforts to collaborate with the government in improving the mobile data experience of our customers wherever there’s a need, using the best technologies despite the challenges posed by the pandemic,” PLDT and Smart head of technology Mario Tamayo said.

“This complements the steady expansion and upgrade of our nationwide LTE network, especially in urban areas which has been enabling our customers to work and study from home, run their online businesses, follow news and other updates about the pandemic and the vaccine rollout as well as stay in touch with loved ones as we keep ourselves socially distanced amid COVID-19 pandemic,” Tamayo added.

Since 2016, the company has been ramping up the deployment of Smart WiFi in high foot-traffic areas across the nation, providing fast, free and reliable all-day internet connectivity in transport hubs, airports, universities, malls and hospitals.

Smart’s mobile network currently serves 96 percent of the population. It has been recognized as the country’s fastest mobile network by third party analytics firm Ookla since 2018.

Smart said its consistent network superiority is a result of PLDT’s continuous investments in the expansion of fixed and wireless networks nationwide to elevate the telecommunications industry and deliver world-class services to Filipinos.

PLDT is investing between P88 billion and P92 billion in capital expenditures this year, which will support Smart’s continuous expansion of its 4G/LTE network across the country, as well as its accelerated rollout of 5G.
