Ex-speaker Alvarez gets COVID-19

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Former speaker and Davao del Norte first district Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez has contracted COVID-19.

Alvarez’s daughter Paola, assistant secretary at the Department of Finance, said her father is recovering at their home.

Paola denied reports that the congressman is in critical condition. “He is not or was intubated,” she said.

Alvarez is the seventh lawmaker who has tested positive for the virus since last month.

Reps. Martin Romualdez of Leyte, Edgar Erice of Caloocan, Alfred delos Santos of Ang Probinsyano party-list, JB Bernos of Abra, Mike Defensor of Anakalusugan party-list and Jocelyn Limkaichong of Negros Oriental also tested positive for the virus.

The House of Representatives logged 277 COVID-19 cases, with seven fatalities since last year, House secretary general Mark Llandro Mendoza said.
