MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is hoping for the recovery of former president Joseph Estrada, who has tested positive for COVID-19.

“We wish former president Erap Estrada to please get well soon. You are a legend here in the Philippines,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque said at a press briefing yesterday.

“We want to see you healthy and we want you to take part in the public life of the country for a very long period of time. Get well soon, Mr. President Erap Estrada,” he added.

The 83-year-old former president was rushed to a hospital last Sunday, according to his son, former senator Jinggoy Estrada. The younger Estrada said his father is in stable condition.

Jinggoy said his father complained of weakness and diarrhea, prompting him to rush his father to an undisclosed medical facility.

Estrada served as president of the Philippines from June 30, 1998 to January 20, 2001.

Accused of corruption, Estrada stepped down after key security officials withdrew their support for him and joined a popular revolt.

In 2007, Estrada was found guilty of plunder and was sentenced to life in prison but was immediately pardoned by his successor, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Estrada, however, managed to revive his political career, serving as mayor of Manila for two consecutive terms.

Arroyo and Sen. Nancy Binay also wished Estrada a speedy recovery.

Arroyo issued a statement praying for Estrada and “all those battling COVID-19.”

Binay posted on Twitter that she sent “all my positive and healing thoughts to the whole Ejercito-Estrada family.”

She said she is confident that Estrada is “safe in the most capable hands of our medical professionals.”
