HPG cop nabbed for extortion
MANILA, Philippines — A police officer of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) was arrested in Parañaque City on Thursday for alleged extortion.
S/Sgt. Marlon Salim was apprehended by agents of the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) at the HPG’s South Luzon Expressway sub-office at around 1:20 p.m., Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Debold Sinas said yesterday.
The operation stemmed from the complaint of a motorist who claimed Salim demanded P5,000 in exchange for settling the former’s involvement in a vehicular accident along the Skyway
in Barangay San Martin de Porres last Jan. 26.
IMEG director Col. Thomas Frias Jr. said Salim promised to release a traffic investigation report and the complainant’s van. The suspect was apparently unaware the vehicle was owned by a policeman assigned in Marikina City, according to IMEG.
Salim was placed under arrest and disarmed after he received P2,000 marked money from the complainant. He was brought to the IMEG headquarters at Camp Crame.
The PNP has started summary dismissal proceedings against Salim, who is facing charges of robbery-extortion.
