BI to hire 195 officers

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration will hire around 195 BI officers to augment the number of personnel deployed at international airports and seaports nationwide, an official announced yesterday.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said they are now accepting applicants for Immigration Officers I to fill vacant positions in the bureau.

“This is also in anticipation of new international airports that will open in the next few years,” Morente said. “We aim to attract new graduates who want to start a career in public service.  This is your time to serve the country by being an immigration officer.”

The applicants must be graduates of a four-year course and have a Career Service Professional Second Level Eligibility from the Civil Service Commission.

Meanwhile, the number of foreigners deported last year dropped by more than 46 percent, Morente said.

BI records showed that only 3,219 foreigners were deported in 2020 compared to 6,000 foreign deportees in 2019.

Morente said the Chinese topped the list of foreign deportees with 3,009 followed by 60 Vietnamese, 40 Koreans, 25 Americans, 20 Japanese, 12 Indians and five Pakistanis.

The foreigners were arrested and deported for working in the Philippines without permits and for involvement in illegal online gambling, telecommunications fraud, economic crimes and investment scams.

“Some of them are wanted fugitives in their countries of origin,” Morente said.

The deported foreigners are blacklisted and banned from re-entering the Philippines.

Morente said 276 foreigners are being held at the BI detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig pending their deportation.
