Sanctions eyed vs dumping of dead pigs

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Mayor Mark Marcos of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro wants sanctions imposed against those who dumped dead pigs along the shores of the town, saying it has caused panic among villagers.

Marcos said residents are now afraid to buy fish for fear that it is contaminated with African swine fever (ASF).

“Kung may managot man lamang sa pangyayaring ito dahil hindi ho biro itong dinulot nila  dito sa aming bayan,” Marcos said.

Nineteen dead pigs, some in a state of decomposition, washed ashore in Naujan on Monday and yesterday.

Fifteen other dead pigs were found along the shores in Pola.

Marcos said they have yet to receive an update from the provincial veterinary office if the pigs died of ASF.

Results of the examination will be brought to the Bureau of Animal Industry for confirmatory testing.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar said he instructed the Department of Agriculture-Mimaropa regional office to investigate the incident in coordination with the Naujan municipal government.
